Notary Test Notification:

How do I receive my notary exam results?

The Notary Public Examination score will be emailed 15 business days following the California Notary Public test. You must provide your email address on the upper right corner of your application. In order to access your notary account you will receive a user name and password from . This email may not clear the  “spam” filter.  Be sure to check your “junk” or “clutter” inbox.

To access your online results select the “My Account” link on the right side toolbar. After you have successfully logged in, select “View Notifications” to view a copy of your notary exam score results letter.

  • Multiple choice
  • Not Open Book Exam
  • Must use a #2 pencil
  • 50 minutes to complete
  • Must score 70%  for a pass



Notary Public Exam Processing:

Applications for renewing your Notary Public commission, will be issued 30 days prior to the expiration of your current commission if you have complied with all California Notary Public State requirements.


Renewing a Notary Commission / Reappointments:

As a renewing Notary Public, you should take the Notary Public test at least six months prior to your commission expiration date. Notary score exam results are valid for one full year from the date of your Notary examination


Background Check For Notaries – Live Scan Fingerprinting:background check for notaries

In order to qualify as a Notary Public for the State of California you are required to provide an Approved Live Scan Background check for the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). This applies to New Notary Public applicants and Renewing Notary Public applicants.  The issuance of a Notary Public commission can be delayed pending completion of a background check by the California Department of Justice


Retaking the State Exam, you must submit the following:

  • Fail notice
  • New completed application
  • The original Proof of Completion (issued by your Notary Instructor)
  • 2″x2″ color passport photograph
  • Check, Cashiers check, or Money order for $20 – Payable to the Secretary of State

    Re-Taking The Notary Test

    You can only test ONCE per month. If the notary test is taken more than once in a month, the results from the 2nd exam will be invalid and no refund will be issued for any fees collected.


Notary Test Rescoring:

Should you want your Notary exam score results to be calculated, you must submit your request in writing with a $30.00 Money Order (Only accepts Money Order for this service) payable to :

Your request for rescoring your notary test score  must be received by CPS HR within 45 days following the original test date.



Notary Public commissions are issued from the Secretary of State’s Office, Notary Public Section.


Notary Exam Emergency Test Closure:

Weather, or other emergencies may force the closure of a scheduled Notary Public exam. In the event of closure, the examination will be rescheduled. All candidates for the test will be notified of the new testing date, time and location.


Applicant Fees:

A Check,  or  Money Order,  made payable to the Secretary of State will be collected on the notary test day. YOUR name must be pre-printed on the check; temporary checks are NOT accepted. Cash is NOT accepted.


Fees are to be paid by check or money order only made payable to the SECRETARY OF STATE, according to the following fee schedule:

  • New applicants and Reappointments: $40.00
  • Applicants who have previously taken the exam and failed: $20.00
